Here is a helpful chart to aid in coming up with hop flavor and aromatic descriptors. Also, here is a hop replacement calculator using statistical analysis of hop oils to recommend hop replacements.
Both charts are interactive, you can click on the legend to add or remove oil compounds from the chart to compare as you wish.
To compare the hops one oil compound at a time, first click each compound from the legend to remove them from the chart.
What does all this mean? Common Hop Oil Aroma and Taste Descriptors
Oil composition is a varietal average and that specific batches of hops may differ from that average value.
Hi Scott,
I am really liking your Total Oils chart. The idea of the Hop Oils Calculator is fantastic too!
I’m curious though, why did you not include Australian and New Zealand hops?
Based on your experience, how accurate are the results from the Hop Oils Calculator?
Best regards,
Tony
I’d like to include Australian and New Zealand hops, but Hopunion didn’t test those varieties last year. Hopefully next year they will! I find the Hop Calculator to be most useful when focusing on the hop oil content of my beers. After multiple brews, I can start to see trends in which oils my palet prefers and can then build recipes with a little bit more confidence.
Hey,
Have you made any movement forward with hops from other countries, like NZ and Australia?
Would Barth-Haas be willing to disclose any information they have on their large portfolio of hops?
You have created a great resource and we can but hope that they also see merit in helping expand upon the list you have already pulled together.
